Rutherford's 71-Run Blitz Stuns RCB Despite MI's IPL Defeat
Sherfane Rutherford delivered an explosive batting performance for the Mumbai Indians, but his valiant 71 off 31 balls could not prevent an 18-run defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their IPL 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 12.
A Lone Warrior Effort
Chasing a daunting target of 241 runs, the Mumbai Indians were restricted to 222/5 despite Rutherford's incredible innings. The West Indies batter smashed nine sixes and a four at a stunning strike rate of 229.03, keeping MI's hopes alive until the final over.
Rutherford walked in after Suryakumar Yadav's dismissal at 121/3 and partnered with skipper Hardik Pandya, who contributed 40 off 22 balls. Opener Ryan Rickelton (37) and Yadav (33) also gave starts, but MI ultimately fell short in the thriller.
RCB Bowlers Hold Their Nerve
For the defending champions, Suyash Sharma led the bowling attack with figures of 2/47 in his four-over spell. Rasikh Dar (1/23), Krunal Pandya (1/26), and Jacob Duffy (1/58) picked up key wickets at regular intervals to ensure RCB secured the victory.
Rutherford launched a brutal assault on his West Indies teammate Romario Shepherd in the final over, hitting four sixes including one that brought up his fifty in 26 balls. However, RCB held their nerve to close out the match.
Fans Praise Fighting Spirit
Despite the loss, Rutherford earned widespread praise from fans and cricket enthusiasts on social media. Many applauded his lone-warrior effort in a near-impossible chase, while others criticized MI management for underutilizing his explosive hitting ability.
In the ongoing IPL 2026 season, Rutherford has aggregated 101 runs in four matches at an average of 50.50 and a strike rate of 219.56. The batter was traded from Gujarat Titans ahead of the mini-auction and has quickly become a fan favorite for his aggressive approach.
