Chelsea and Dortmund Maintain Interest in Arsenal Talent Nwaneri

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund remain interested in Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri, despite the 18-year-old currently being on loan at Marseille.

Loan Move Raises Questions

Arsenal allowed Nwaneri to join the French club midway through the January transfer window, with the teenager already making four appearances for Marseille. The decision to let the promising midfielder leave has drawn criticism from some quarters, particularly after Arsenal suffered an injury setback.

Journalist Charles Watts expressed frustration about the timing of Nwaneri's departure following news that Mikel Merino sustained a foot injury at the beginning of February that will sideline him 'for an extended period.'

Watts wrote on social media that while the loan move benefits Nwaneri's development, it has left Arsenal's squad thinner during a crucial period of the season.

Romano Reveals Transfer Interest

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano clarified Nwaneri's situation and the interest surrounding him.

"Now, it is complicated. He is at Marseille on loan, not with an option, so he is not going to stay there next season. He will go back to Arsenal. But what happens in the summer transfer window?"

Romano explained that Dortmund had pursued Nwaneri on a permanent transfer as far back as a year ago, when Arsenal were negotiating a new contract with the player. Chelsea were also strongly interested at that time.

"That interest remains strong now. Several clubs around Europe are attentive to the situation. But Arsenal have not told the player or his camp that he can leave in the summer. So that is not the case at the moment. It is still not decided," Romano added.

Arteta Sets Standards for Academy Graduates

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has made clear that academy graduates must earn their place in the first team, regardless of their reputation or potential.

"At the end, what has to define this football club is to seek for excellence and seek for the best, regardless if you're coming from the academy or abroad," Arteta stated.

The Arsenal boss emphasized that while having Hale End graduates in the squad benefits the club's identity, performance must be sustained at the highest level.

"But at the end they have to earn it. Not for a week, not for a month, for years. Like anybody else, it doesn't matter what department or role you have in the club. You have to sustain performance and that has to be at the very highest level if we want to win and be where we want to be."

Summer Decision Awaits

Romano indicated that Arsenal will assess Nwaneri's situation at the end of the season, with Dortmund hoping to secure another talented youngster they could potentially develop and sell for profit in future. For now, Nwaneri remains focused on his development in France while his long-term future at the Emirates remains uncertain.
