Cowboys Eye Blockbuster Trade for Ohio State's Sonny Styles
The Dallas Cowboys are positioned to make a significant move in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, with analysts suggesting a potential blockbuster trade that could reshape the NFC East landscape.
Armed with two first-round picks, Dallas has the ammunition to move up the draft board substantially. Yahoo Sports analyst Frank Schwab has identified Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles as a prime target, recommending the Cowboys trade up to the No. 3 overall selection held by the Arizona Cardinals.
Why Styles Makes Sense for Dallas
"The one thing the Cowboys really need is kind of an off-ball linebacker," Schwab said. "Get the one impact guy I think could get you really close to the Eagles."
The Cowboys' struggles at the inside linebacker position have been well documented. Recent trades for Kenneth Murray and Logan Wilson both failed to address the position adequately, leaving Dallas without a proven starter alongside DeMarvion Overshown. Additionally, the team lacks a defensive signal caller, a role Styles handled during his time at Ohio State.
Styles brings an impressive skill set to the table. He demonstrates elite athleticism, reliable tackling ability, strong coverage skills, and exceptional run defense. While not considered an elite pass rusher, his blitzing capabilities remain more than adequate for the position.
The Cost of Moving Up
According to the NFL Draft Trade Value Chart, executing such a trade would require significant compensation. Dallas' two first-round picks carry a combined value of 2,050 points, while Arizona's No. 3 selection is valued at 2,200 points. To balance the equation, the Cowboys would likely need to include their third-round pick, bringing the total to 2,182 points.
For the rebuilding Cardinals, acquiring additional draft capital could accelerate their development process. The potential deal represents a significant gamble for Dallas, as it would leave a substantial gap between their first and fourth-round selections.
With owner Jerry Jones known for his aggressive approach and the team's pressing defensive needs, a major first-round move remains a distinct possibility. If Styles develops into the elite defender many project him to become, the cost of acquiring him will quickly become an afterthought.
