Euphoria Season 2 Recap: What to Remember Before Season 3
After nearly four years off screen, Euphoria returns with its third season on HBO on April 13. Stars Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney reprise their roles, with the characters now confronting adult realities. Rue Bennett finds herself deep in a dangerous criminal underworld, while Cassie Howard produces online adult content ahead of her wedding to Nate Jacobs.
Before diving into the new episodes, here is a comprehensive rundown of the key events from the second season.
Rue's Battle with Sobriety
The second season opened with a new school term. Following her split from Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, Rue suffered a severe relapse in her journey toward sobriety. Her struggles intensified as she became entangled with ruthless crime boss Laurie, played by Martha Kelly. Rue ended up consuming and losing $10,000 worth of drugs, leaving her in debt to the dangerous criminal who vowed to abduct and traffic her if she failed to repay.
Cassie and Nate's Secret Affair
While Nate secretly conducted an affair with Cassie, he remained in conflict with his father, Cal Jacobs, played by Eric Dane. After a cathartic drinking binge, Cal walked away from his suburban life and family. Nate retaliated against his father by handing over video footage of Cal's sexual encounter with an underage Jules to the police.
Rue eventually exposed the affair between Cassie and Nate to Maddie, played by Alexa Demie. Nate's obsession with Cassie stemmed from her habit of dressing like Maddie. Cassie pursued the relationship even after it destroyed her friendship with Maddie.
Tragedy Strikes Fez and Ashtray
The second season marked the final appearance of Barbie Ferreira as Kat, the late Angus Cloud as the beloved Fez, and Javon Walton as Ashtray. In the finale, Fez prepared to attend Lexi's school play for their date. However, a SWAT team descended on his home. In a tragic turn, officers gunned down Ashtray despite Fez's warnings. Fez was taken into custody as he watched his young friend die.
Lexi's School Play
The final two episodes centered on Lexi's production, titled Our Life. Despite revealing intimate details about those around her, Maddie was genuinely moved by the performance. Nate recognized the play mocked him through one of its characters and ended his relationship with Cassie.
Cassie's breakdown nearly ruined her sister's performance. After Lexi portrayed Cassie's sexual fantasy at a carousel, Maddie confronted her former friend. Their conflict remained unresolved as the season concluded.
The Cliffhanger Ending
The second season ended on a tense note. Rue, having achieved brief sobriety, relapsed and spiraled downward. She found herself unable to repay Laurie, who had made clear the consequences would be severe. The third season will reveal how these storylines unfold when the characters return to screens.
